What is a Small-scale Generation Certificate (STC)?

1 STC = MW/h of Clean Energy

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are a tradeable certificate in Australia’s renewable energy market. They are part of the federal government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) under the Renewable Energy Target (RET), which aims to promote the uptake of renewable energy sources.

1 STC = 1 MWh of calculated electricity either generated by a renewable energy source or displaced by the installed system.

STCs are generated by installing small-scale technologies that harness renewable energy. This can include solar PV systems*, battery energy storage systems, and solar or air source heat pump water heaters.

The quantity of STCs is calculated based on the location of the system, the electricity generated or displaced, and the years left in the scheme until it ends in 2030*.

*From 1 October, solar PV systems up to 1MW may be eligible to create STCs and have a fixed 5-year deeming period.
